Using EFT to help curb over snacking and binge eating is extremely effective however, we need to use the right tapping approach. If mechanical EFT tapping (the EFT Basic Recipe) is not working, then we are being too global or general and we need to get more specific.

Generally, not being able to ‘tap down’ food urges or have them return, indicates that there is something else going on underneath. In this case, it is more effective if we discover and tap on the root or primary cause and treat the cravings as a symptom or secondary issue.

Snacking and binging can help soothe us during stressful and emotional times - Especially carby foods like sugar and starches, because they help distract us from our troubles (albeit, only for the short term) and trigger our body to produce endorphins (feel good hormones).

Our subconscious (mind-body) is very resourceful, and if we don’t have a better way to comfort ourselves, we will reach for food!

If we consider uncontrollable food urges to be a solution to a problem (although, not a very resourceful one) and not something bad that needs to be tapped away, eliminated or beaten down, we can become aware of some very helpful clues that will help us improve our tapping results.

Discovering and tapping on the cause is far more likely to bring us long term relief. Plus, we’ll benefit from other positive side effects like; weight loss, better health, improved sleep patterns, more energy and increased self esteem!

A great place to find important clues is right when we have the urge to snack or binge. Are we feeling lonely, stressed, fearful, depressed, sad, guilty, anxious, worried or rejected? Stressful or negative emotions can trigger excessive snacking and binging, that's why it’s called emotional eating!

When we tap on and successfully shift or transform the emotional cause, the urge to eat when we are not hungry will go away because we've calmed our self emotionally and we no longer require the food to sooth us -- for sure, a more resourceful and much healthier solution!

So, put on your Sherlock Holmes detective hat and learn to discover and tap on the cause, the underlying negative emotion… instead of the symptom, the craving itself.

Once we learn to manage our cravings more effectively, weight loss success is totally within our reach! As Gary Craig says... extra weight is a symptom of something else and this something else, is stressful or negative emotions!

How to Tap for Cravings: Beyond the EFT Basic Recipe

a) "WAIT... Before You Put That in Your Mouth!" Tapping Just Before Snacking or Binge Eating

1 - Take notice when you are just about to snack or partake in binge eating.

2 - Right before eating it, tap;

ET I'm going to eat this _______ (chocolate, cookie, ice cream etc) and nothing or no one is going to stop me... I acknowledge the feelings I have in my body, right here right now.

3 - Stop for a moment, close your eyes and tune into your body. Notice any sensations in your body, how intense they are and what emotions come up for you i.e. sadness, loneliness, anger, boredom, blame, guilt, despair, powerlessness etc.

4 - Tap on the stressful emotion i.e. loneliness. If the emotion does not shift sufficiently, then ask yourself what this emotion or feeling in your body reminds you of. Then you can tap on that. It’s like following an emotional trail to find the pot of ‘Tapping Gold’!

Examples of ‘Tapping Gold’;

- In grade school, you came home to an empty house and were alone from 3:30 to 5:00. You wrapped yourself in a blanket, watched T.V. and soothed yourself by snacking.

- As a child you were given cookies and milk before bed. Now you live by yourself and have bouts of deep loneliness and sadness at night. Snacking in the evening comforts and soothes you.

b) Tapping into Your Imagination for Clues

1 - Close your eyes, slow yourself down and tune into the food or snack you crave.

In your minds eye, imagine how it looks, the color, the smell, feel the texture as you hold it and put it in your mouth, the taste... etc. Take your time and use the power of your imagination to recall the experience of this food.

2 - As you develop this and savor the idea of eating it, locate where you feel the craving in your body.

3 - Tune into this spot, put your hand on your heart or solar plexus and ask yourself; “Is there something that needs to be acknowledged, transformed (healed) or cleared? Or, does something need filling?” i.e. a void or a hole. Now, listen very closely to what comes up.

Examples of More Tapping Gold;

- Since you are not very good in the self love and self appreciation department, you use food to fill this void/hole. Snacking helps you give yourself something to feel validated, comforted and loved.

- You had safety and personal security issues as a child i.e. mental, emotional or physical abuse or trauma (even minor things I call ‘white picket fence’ trauma). Snacking helps you gain and maintain extra body weight and a larger size. The size and weight creates a physical a barrier or protection around you which helps you to feel safer and more secure.

- As a child your diet was overly controlled by a domineering parent. Out of rebellion to this negative and restrictive pattern, you snack, binge and overeat today.

- Sharing chocolate with your father is a cherished childhood memory. Your father has passed away and part of you feels that giving up chocolate would be denying your love and respect for him.

In Summary

1 - If basic or mechanical EFT tapping is not curbing your cravings, discover and tap on the primary or root cause.

2 - Our subconscious mind is very resourceful and will use food to help comfort and soothe us.

3 - Find clues about what to use EFT on just before you overeat and tapping into your imagination.
